Vibratory Finishing Cycle Times, Realistic Ranges
Cycle time is the question every buyer asks first. The honest answer is a range, because it depends on machine type, media, compound, part material and the target finish. Below are typical ranges seen in UK production work, along with when to shift to a high-energy machine.
Typical ranges by goal
Light deburr (remove a small burr from a machined edge): 30 to 90 minutes in a standard bowl or trough.
General deburr and edge radius: 1 to 3 hours. Most subcontract deburring jobs sit in this band.
Surface improvement and pre-plate finish: 2 to 6 hours, depending on target Ra and starting condition.
Polishing (bright, uniform): 2 to 8 hours across a cut stage plus a polish stage.
Mirror or superfinish: 6 to 16 hours, usually a two-stage process ending on paste or fine porcelain.
Descaling and derusting: 1 to 4 hours with an aggressive cut media and an inhibited compound.
Why two-stage processes are faster overall
Trying to deburr AND polish in one media grade gives the worst of both worlds, slow cut, mediocre finish. Splitting the process is faster and more predictable.
Stage one (cut): coarse-cut ceramic angle-cut media, non-ferrous or ferrous liquid compound depending on part, 1 to 3 hours. This removes burrs and evens out the surface.
Stage two (polish): porcelain, fine plastic or a paste with maize/corncob carrier, 1 to 4 hours. This closes the surface without further cutting.
For steel polishing, an overnight dry paste polish in a barrel or tub is standard, around 16 hours of unattended running for a mirror finish.
High-energy machines change the maths
Centrifugal disc machines (often called TURBO type) run at 10 to 20× the g-force of a standard bowl. Aluminium parts that take 60 minutes in a bowl can finish in around 20 minutes in a centrifugal disc.
The trade-off is batch size (smaller) and part robustness (parts must tolerate high energy without part-on-part damage). For high-volume small parts, high-energy pays back quickly.
Centrifugal barrel machines take this further again but are typically used for polishing rather than deburring.
Material-specific expectations
Aluminium: usually the fastest metal. Bowl deburr 30 to 90 min; TURBO 15 to 30 min.
Mild steel: cut in 1 to 2 hours; polish stage 2 to 6 hours (or overnight dry).
Stainless steel: 1 to 5 hours typical, median 2 hours. Harder to cut, so allow more time than mild steel.
Titanium: 4 to 16 hours. Slow but predictable, do not push cycle time by escalating media aggressiveness.
Zinc and brass castings: 30 min to 2 hours, mostly using plastic media pre-plate.
Always run a first-off
Before committing a full batch, run a first-off sample and inspect. Vibratory finishing is deterministic when set up correctly, but small changes in load, water flow or media wear affect cycle time. A first-off saves hours of rework.
Frequently asked questions
Can I speed up a process by increasing machine amplitude?
Slightly, but higher amplitude increases part-on-part impact and impingement risk. Media grade and cycle time are usually the better levers.
Does more compound mean faster cutting?
No, more water and compound flow makes the process more lubricated and slower cutting. Reduce flow to increase cut rate; increase flow for polishing.
How do I know when a process is finished?
Ra measurement, edge feel, or visual inspection of a first-off. Set a target before starting rather than 'running until it looks right'.
